COVID-19 has negatively impacted our entire small business community. However, entrepreneurs of color haven’t been able to access disaster financing and relief funding at the same rate as other business owners. Below is a listing of financial assistance programs for local small businesses in the form of loans and grants to provide the critical funds needed to weather the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CCED Small Business Grants

The CCED Small Business Stabilization Fund will provide emergency relief grants to small businesses that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 within the Kansas City, Missouri Central City Economic Development (CCED) Sales Tax District boundaries. The Fund will provide immediate assistance to cover operating expenses, defined as the day-to-day operations, such as payroll, utilities, and rent.

G.I.F.T. - Generating Income for Tomorrow

Generating Income For Tomorrow’s goal is to create a clear path to economic prosperity and wealth for the African American community in Kansas City. We plan to do this by identifying and providing grants to Black owned businesses in Kansas City, with a specific interest in businesses that operate in low income areas.

We will fund Black owned businesses all throughout the Greater Kansas City area, but will be primarily focusing on the zip codes of Kansas City, MO that contain the highest concentrations of Black people living in poverty. This area is bordered by Ninth Street on the north, Bannister Road on the south, Troost Avenue on the west, and Hardesty Drive on the east. This area is generally referred to as the Urban Core of the city.

Kansas City Minority Business Resiliency Grant

The Resiliency Grant program will award up to $5,000 to at least 20 racial/ethnic minority-owned businesses. The grants are funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and administered by the UMKC Innovation Center in partnership with local financial institutions.

  • The total grant pool is $100,000
  • Fund requests have a minimum of $500 and maximum of $5,000
  • There will be a minimum of 20 grant awards
  • Only the first 100 applications will be considered for a microgrant

Applications open 12 noon on Monday, Aug. 17.

The Clay County Kansas City Missouri CARES Act Grant Fund will provide funding to help small businesses in Clay County located within the city limits of Kansas City Missouri, to provide operational expenses during this unprecedented period of economic stress due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

SAFE Small Business Grants - ROUND 2

Administered by the Community Capital Fund (CCF), in partnership with the City of Kansas City, Missouri Health Department, the Startup Assets for Economic (SAFE) Opportunity entrepreneurship grant program will award micro-grants ranging from $500 to $2,000 to residents of Kansas City.

Providing loans up to $25,000 to help small businesses within the city limits of Kansas City, Missouri.

The Kansas City Missouri Small Business Relief Loan Fund will provide loans up to $25,000 to help small businesses within the city limits of Kansas City Missouri continue to finance operational expenses during this unprecedented period of economic stress due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The Fund allows for low interest rate loans, deferred payments for the first 6-12 months, and extended amortization periods of up to five years. There are no minimum credit score requirements and flexible collateral requirements.
